A God in Ruins

A God in Ruins

Kate Atkinson
(Recent Prize Winner)

What caused you to read the novel? What did you like about it?

A God in Ruins is the best novel I have read for my English literature list so far. I started reading it because I am interested in the second world war and what is was like for a young man who became captain of a bomber plane. What I liked so much about it was the original view on the war and the contrast between the hero and the anti-hero, which are both the same character.

Describe the novel in a tweet

The book is about the life of Teddy during and after the second world war, with  an ending which leaves you in ultimate confusion.

What makes this novel interesting?

The novel is made interesting by the multiple round characters, who all have their own views, feelings and shortcomings.

In what categories would you place this novel?

Second World War, growing-up, family relationships, impact one person has on the world.

Which novel would you recommend after reading this one?

With the theme of the Second World War I would also recommend All the Light we Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, although I did not find it nearly as good as A God in Ruins.
